In the first episode, the man for whom the fort is named is interviewed. Marty Willett began portraying Colonel Hawkins during the fort’s bicentennial in 2006, and he revives that role for this interview.
Future episodes in this historic series will include archeological findings at Fort Hawkins, the fort’s role in Macon’s history, the elementary school called Fort Hawkins that once occupied much of the fort’s area, and the future for Fort Hawkins. The fort is now open for tours every Saturday and Sunday from 12noon to 4pm, and the official grand re-opening will take place during Macon’s Cherry Blossom Festival, on Saturday, March 25.
In cooperation with the Fort Hawkins Foundation, this podcast series is produced by Middle Georgia radio veteran Ben Sandifer, a 2016 inductee in the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame, and 8 time “Gabby Award” winner from the Georgia Association of Broadcasters. Middle GA Podcasts channel was launched in 2020, and includes a variety of audio podcasts about the businesses, culture, events, history, and people of Middle Georgia.
