Box City Summer Camp

After successfully bringing back Box City Summer Camp last year, Historic Macon is holding Box City Summer Camp again in 2023! This program will introduce campers to urban design and historic preservation through interactive activities. This summer, we will have TWO sessions. The first, June 19-23, will host rising 3rd-5th graders for a week of day camp. The second week, June 26-30, will be for rising 6th-8th graders.

The Box City curriculum focuses on teaching the principles behind community planning and urban design. Historic Macon’s Box City Camp will build off those principles and give campers the opportunity to plan and build their own city out of recycled boxes and other materials. As a group, the campers will decide the “who, what, when, and where” of their city and will work together to construct it. Each day during the week the campers will have an additional activity that will teach information about urban planning and the built environment. Special guests will stop by and talk to the campers about the concepts they are being taught at camp. Exploratory walks will be taken around downtown so that campers can see first-hand different building styles and uses.

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Theatre Macon, Box City Summer Camp will be held at the Theatre Macon Education Annex located at 424 Cherry Street.

Camp will begin each day at 8:30 a.m. and will run until 12:30 p.m. Historic Macon will not provide lunch, but will provide midday snacks and water. The camp will be run by Emily Allmond, Lanier Education Coordinator. Each session will cost $100 per camper for nonmembers, $75 per camper for members. Scholarships are available.
