Choral Concert Durufle' Requiem

On April 28, 2024, the Choral Society of Middle Georgia, the Mercer University Choir, the Mercer Singers, and the Mulberry Street United Methodist Church of Macon combine more than 120 voices to perform the beautiful Duruflé Requiem.  Maurice Durufle’ (1902-1986) weaves his love of the shapes and colors of plainsong or Gregorian chant style in his masterwork Requiem written in 1947.  The conductors are Stanley Roberts and Gary Gerber with accompanist Jonathan Poe on the organ.

A requiem is a musical service or composition in honor of the dead.  From the Latin requiem “rest,” the first phrase is Requiem aeternum dona eis “Eternal rest grant to them.”  The inspiration for performing this piece by French composer Maurice Durufle’ (1902-1986) with the combined choirs for this spring concert is the performance the Mercer choirs will be a part of this summer.  The 80th Anniversary of D-Day, an event that marked a major turning point in World War II, will be celebrated in Normandy, France in June.  The Mercer choirs will be joining other choirs as part of this major event.

Other pieces performed at the spring concert are Morten Lauridsen Ave Verum Corpus, Peter Anglea Jubilate Deo, and Wolfgang Amadé Mozart Motet, Ave verum corpus.

The concert is Sunday afternoon, April 28, 2024 at 4:00 P.M. at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church, Macon, GA.  Tickets are $10.00 to the general public.  Mercer students and faculty are free with Mercer ID.  Tickets may be purchased online from Mercer ticketing at https://tinyurl.com/ycjx8dtb  or at the door.
