Fort Hawkins Open Memorial Day

 Join the Fort Hawkins Commission’s 3rd Annual Memorial Day Oberservance on Monday, May 28, 2012 beginning with a patriotic ceremony at 12:00 Noon at the Fort Hill Cemetery (Short Street off Emery Highway). The Fort Hill Cemetery was the original Fort Hawkins cemetery in 1806 and it is estimated between 20 to 200 U.S. Army soldiers are buried there in unmarked graves including those that served in the War of 1812. This year’s ceremony will feature speaker Mr. James Preston, whose great, great, great, great grandfather was the Fort Hawkins Commander during the War of 1812, Major Phillip Cook. Following the brief ceremony, the Fort Hawkins site on Emery Highway will be open to the public to continue the Memorial Day Observance until 4:00 p.m. with no admission charge. Visitors may enjoy touring the three story Blockhouse Replica and archaeological dig site both with new exhibits and displays.
