Intro to Vegetable Gardening

We often hear people say a variation on the following: “I don’t know the first thing about gardening,” “I have a black thumb,” or “every plant I touch dies.”

Does that sound like you? We have a solution! Centenary Community Ministries is hosting a series of interactive Community Gardening classes for beginners, spanning a wide variety of subjects. Register to join us for our first class on May 10th at 5:30pm.

Starter sprouts to practice your skills with
A hands-on learning experience in one of our community garden plots
A notebook and handouts to revisit during your gardening journey

Refreshments and snacks will be provided during this hourlong workshop hosted in the Community Garden. Basic tools will also be provided for demos, but we encourage you to bring your own gloves and simple tools (hand trowels and hand rakes) if you have them.

Beginners Guide

In this first class, we will explore simple gardening details for beginner gardeners. We will discuss the plant cycle, how to begin a garden bed or container, knowing what to grow and when, and the average timeline to follow when starting your garden. This class is great for beginners who have never grown their own plants before; this class is also teen-friendly, if you have a young gardener at home. 

At Centenary Community Ministries, we seek to build sustainable programs for vulnerable populations, including those who struggle with limited access to reliable food sources. For that reason, our gardening centers mostly on organic, edible crops like vegetables, herbs, and fruit. This class may not be for you if you’re interested in learning about growing flowers or native plants.
