Mercer Opera Presents Dido and Aeneas

Mercer University Opera will present the Henry Purcell opera Dido and Aeneas on Oct. 21-23 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 24 at 3 p.m.

The show takes place in the environment of Ancient Greece. Queen Dido of Carthage offers her hospitality to Prince Aeneas and his soldiers, who have escaped the fall of Troy and have been sailing the Mediterranean for years seeking their new homeland. When they are driven ashore at Carthage, Dido and Aeneas fall madly in love.

Director Martha Malone, professor of music, notes that, “The opera is by turns graceful, romantic, bawdy, suspenseful and grief-stricken. This is music that lifts the spirit and moves the soul.” Alongside Malone, the production will feature Professor Richard Kosowski as music director and conductor, Faith Madison Holton as choreographer, and Shelley Kuhen as costume designer.

The concert will take place in Neva Langley Fickling Hall in the McCorkle Music Building. Tickets are $15 per person and available at the door only. Admission is free to those with a Mercer ID or any valid student ID. For information and patrons seeking special accommodations, call 478-301-2748.
