Blackbridge Hall Gallery is proud to present Passages, an exhibition produced by Georgia College alum Michael Marks. Passages, is an exhibition featuring paintings, drawings, collages, and wall installations. Through various processes of editing, alteration and abstraction, Marks reconfigures and synthesizes historical images and texts to evoke new narratives.
When talking about his current work, Marks says, “My work is, in its broadest terms, an examination of history. Primarily, I draw upon the art historical image, digital and mechanically produced reproduction, and text as the foundation for my work.”
Marks’ style is an examination of history uniting in artistic expression and private reflection. His works intend to have an emotional resonance. He cultivates the enigmatic nature of the past allowing them to retain a certain amount of resistance to immediate interpretations.
Marks was born in Birmingham, Alabama and has lived throughout the Southeast. After receiving his Associates of Arts from Macon State College, he attended Georgia College for his Bachelors of Arts and completed his Masters of Fine Arts from Clemson University. His work is shown nationally and internationally. He currently teaches Drawing and Foundations at Anderson University in South Carolina.
This exhibition is curated by Georgia College senior art major, Cutis Williams, in fulfillment of his Museum Studies capstone thesis project.
