The Robert McDuffie Center for Strings Fabian Concert Series presents Virtuoso Viola

The Robert McDuffie Center for Strings Fabian Concert Series presents Virtuoso Viola featuring guest artists Hsin-Yun Huang, viola, and Sarah Rothenberg, piano, in concert with McDuffie Center director and Caroline Paul King Violin Chair Amy Schwartz Moretti, on Tuesday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in Fickling Hall at the McCorkle Music Building on the Macon campus of Mercer University. This is the final Fabian Series concert of the season. The program includes Marchenbilder by Robert Schumann, Romances (2011) by Paul Rouders, Chaconne from Bach’s Violin Partita No. 2, and Mozart’s Piano Quartet in G minor. McDuffie Center student Riana Anthony, a freshman cellist, will join the trio to perform the Piano Quartet. Tickets are $10 for the general public and free with Mercer I.D. “Both guest artists are amazing musicians,” said Schwartz Moretti. “Hsin-Yun has to be one of my favorite violists. She’s really a beautiful player. I am also looking forward to performing with Sarah Rothenberg who is well known for her artistry."
Huang is recognized as one of the leading violists of her generation. She came to international prominence in 1993 when she won top prize at the ARD International Music Competition in Munich and the Bunkamura Orchard Hall Award. In 1988 Huang was became the youngest performer yet to earn Gold Medalist in the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition on the Isle of Man. These and other honors have propelled a career as soloist and chamber musician on stages of major concert halls throughout North America, Europe, and the Far East including performances for Carnegie Hall’s Making Music series. Rothenberg has been noted for her “power and introspection” in The New York Times and “heart, intellect and fabulous technical resources” in Fanfare. Off-stage she serves as artistic director of Da Camera, a Houston, Texas-based organization that presents classical music and jazz. She has received international acclaim as solo recitalist and chamber musician, and the innovative programs that she conceives and directs have been enthusiastically received by audiences across America and in Europe. She has been a frequent performer on Lincoln Center’s Great Performers series in New York, as well as appearing at London’s Barbican Centre, The Aldeburgh Festival (England), The Cervantino Festival (Mexico), Teatro Municipale (Santiago, Chile) and the Library of Congress. She has performed solo recitals in some of the greatest music halls throughout the world and she received the Medal of Chevalier in the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government in 2000.
