Tubman Museum Opening Reception: "Reparative Justice: Hidden Histories"

The exhibition, titled “Reparative Justice: Hidden Histories,” will provide a platform for crucial conversations and reflections on history. Delve into the remarkable artifacts from Wesleyan’s archives, shedding light on the institution’s complex past as it existed in the antebellum and slave-holding South. This exhibition is a step toward understanding and acknowledging the role institutions played in the history of racial injustice.

A celebration of the diligent efforts of community members and the Bicentennial Subcommittee on Historic Markers. We invite you to explore the intriguing behind-the-scenes journey of creating the first historic markers, commemorating the long-overlooked slave auction sites on Poplar Street. Additionally, the event aims to amplify the historical significance of Macon’s Historic Cotton Avenue African American business district.

We are excited to also acknowledge and honor the contributions of Storytellers Macon and the “Still Bending the Arc: Race and Culture in Your Generation” series. This initiative will bring forward intergenerational voices and stories of racial justice from both Wesleyan undergraduate students and esteemed community elders. The project entails the creation of a user-friendly listening booth, allowing individuals to immerse themselves in these inspiring stories, one at a time.

The exhibit will be hosted at the Tubman Museum, offering an immersive and reflective experience. “Reparative Justice: Hidden Histories” will be available for exploration until December 2023. To mark the commencement of this important exhibition, the Tubman Museum will host a reception on Sunday, August 27th, starting at 3:00 PM.
