Georgia's Old Capital Museum

Georgia’s Old Capital Museum is a regional history museum located on the ground floor of Georgia’s Old Statehouse in Milledgeville, Georgia. The museum interprets the history of middle Georgia from prehistory through the turn of the 20th Century. It consists of ten galleries that follow a timeline beginning with early Native American cultures, continues through exploration and colonization of Georgia and westward expansion, the founding of Milledgeville in 1803 as the last frontier and the antebellum capital of Georgia, and concludes with secession, the Civil War and reconstruction efforts of the late 19th century. The Brown – Stetson – Sanford House is an 1825 architectural gem built by John Marlor in the “Milledgeville Federal” style with its characteristic columned double porch and spiral staircase. The parlor still has its original ‘graining” where pine was stained to resemble more exotic and expensive woods. Both the museum and the house are great places to go for an outing of historic proportions!
