Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Park is a memorial to the relationship of people and natural resources in this corner of North America. We preserve a continuous record of human life in the Southeast from the earliest times to the present, there is evidence here of 17,000 years of human habitation. Native Americans first came here during the Paleo-Indian period hunting Ice Age mammals. Different Native American cultures occupied this land for thousands of years. The Mississippian culture arrived here around 900 C.E. constructing mounds and council chambers in their villages. Today, the mounds and their way of life still remain for people to see.
