Mike is from an agricultural family, farming in Kansas and ranching in Colorado. Mike spent four years in the Air Force, returned to college, and graduated from the University of Georgia with a double major in Geology and Agronomy. He started his career with the Soil Conservation Service in Georgia, serving as a Soil Conservationist, District Conservationist, and Designated District Conservationist. In 1988, Mike was assigned to the National Cartographic & Geospatial Center, serving as the National Remote Sensing leader, co-authoring "Basic Photo Interepetion". In 1992, Mike became the National Global Positioning System (GPS) Leader, providing technical leadership for GPS. Mike also served as the Agricultural Specialist and Terrestrial Leader on the United States GPS International Exhibit Team. Mike spent three years traveling world wide to support GPS applications. He has been recognized for his contribution to GPS by the United Nations, NASA, the Department of State, the Interagency GPS Executive Board, and the Institute of Navigation. Mike retired 2010, moving back to Perry, Georgia with his wife of 38 years, to take up his true passion, wood turning, wood carving, and sculpture.
