Macon, GA — Tis the season for rushing through stores looking for the right gifts, baking Christmas cookies and then baking some more, and putting up Christmas decorations.   In the midst of the rush, make plans to sit back, relax and become immersed in the peace of Christmas through the music of Handel’s Messiah in Macon’s beautiful St. Joseph Catholic Church.

“In 2015 we moved the presentation to two nights on the weekend to give more people an opportunity to attend,” said Sean Devenny, President of the Choral Society of Middle Georgia.  “It is a great honor to present this classic piece of Christmas to a greater audience.”

The concerts are directed by Dr. Stanley L. Roberts and is presented by the Choral Society of Middle Georgia and featuring the Festival Chamber Orchestra and soloists Jasmine Habersham (soprano), Rebecca Lanning (mezzo-soprano), Beau Palmer (tenor), and William Killmeier (bass).

Although originally performed the week prior to Easter in 1742, it has become a celebrated Christmas tradition throughout the world.  Scholar and editor Charles Jennens compiled texts from the King James Bible and The Book of Common Prayer to write the libretto—that begins with Old Testament prophecies, and then tells the story of Christ through the nativity, crucifixion, resurrection, and the promised Second Coming and Judgement.  Jennens took his libretto to his friend George Freidrich Handel who composed the incredibly beautiful and moving Messiah that resonates with all who hear it.

The CSMG sings portions of the Messiah that are traditionally considered the “Christmas portion” with the prophecy and birth of Christ.

The Choral Society of Middle Georgia (originally called the Macon Civic Choral) has been serving the Middle Georgia area with great works of choral music for more than 40 years.   The partnership with Mercer University was officially established in 2010.

Performances will be Friday, December 9 and Saturday, December 10 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 830 Poplar Street, Macon, GA.  The concerts begin at 7:30 P.M. each night.  Admission is $10 per person.
