Almost 500 years ago, on October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted 95 Theses, or statements for debate, on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany. While the debate Luther called for on the sale of indulgences was never held, this date is usually given as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.
