Handel's Messiah

Handel's Messiah

Presented by Choral Society of Middle Georgia at St. Joseph Catholic Church

Macon, GA — Although written in 1742 as an Easter offering, Handel’s Messiah has been embraced as a celebration of Advent and the Christmas season for centuries.   Macon, GA has also held this tradition for many years.  The Choral Society of Middle Georgia and the Mercer University Choir will perform George Frideric Handel’s Messiah on two evenings in December at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Macon.

The nativity story is presented mostly through Old Testament prophecies, with some New Testament narrative.   It begins with the prophesy of the coming of Christ. “Comfort ye, comfort ye My people, saith your God…prepare ye the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.”

“The whole first part of Messiah is about the prophesy of the birth of Christ,” said Sean Devenny, President of the Choral Society of Middle Georgia.  “It is an honor for us to present this great piece in preparation for Christmas to the middle Georgia area.”

The concerts are directed by Dr. Stanley L. Roberts and is presented by the Choral Society of Middle Georgia and the Mercer University Choir.

The Choral Society of Middle Georgia (originally called the Macon Civic Choral) has been serving the Middle Georgia area with great works of choral music for more than 40 years. The partnership with Mercer University was officially established in 2010.

Performances will be Saturday, December 9 and Sunday, December 10 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 830 Poplar Street, Macon, GA. The concerts begin at 7:30 P.M. each night.  Admission is $10 per person.
