Sunset Baby is a smart and bracing play about two generations of urban outlaws struggling to stay afloat in the lower depths. By Dominique Morisseau and Directed by Kenny Dozier. Presenter: Venson & Associates
Kenyatta Shakur is alone. His wife has died, and this former Black Revolutionary and political prisoner is desperate to reconnect with his estranged daughter, Nina. If Kenyatta truly wants to reconcile his past, he must first conquer his most challenging revolution of all – fatherhood. Sunset Baby is an energized, vibrant, and witty look at the point where the personal and political collide.
SUNSET BABY is about a former black revolutionary Kenyatta Shakur and the relationship with his estranged daughter Nina. The play explores the gaps between generations, movements, and the effect that absent fathers have on their young daughters. That dynamic is so rarely examined on the stage: we usually talk about the effect it has on young black boys, but what about our girls?
When former Kenyatta reaches out to Nina shortly after her mother’s passing, he has high hopes of reuniting and burying the wounds of the past. What he finds instead is a vengeful daughter who embodies everything contrary to the movement he fought in. If Kenyatta truly wants to reconcile the past, he must first conquer his most challenging revolution of all— fatherhood.
