Award Winning Writers Group Hosts Reading at Sidney Lanier Cottage

Presented by Macon Writers Group at Sidney Lanier Cottage

The Macon Writers Group will host a reading at the historic home of noted poet, musician and soldier, Sidney Lanier. This special event will feature Writers Group members reading their works of poetry and prose, followed by a reception.

The Macon Writers Group began as an unnamed and very informal gathering of writers and readers who would meet one Saturday afternoon a month in the back room of the Golden Bough bookstore to share their writing and literary aspirations with others of like mind. In its early incarnation the group existed without much leadership or formal structure. It was an organization that functioned exclusively through word of mouth. A few years back this hodgepodge of aspiring writers was put into the care of Dr. Shane Trayers of Macon State University. Under her guidance the group has evolved into an organization with an actual name, a logo, a much sought after tee-shirt, a Google group with more than 35 registered members, and most importantly, an effective and efficient means of submitting work for critique by the group. The Macon Writers Group meets on the last Saturday of every month. Meeting are 2:00 P.M. at the Sidney Lanier Cottage. Membership in the group is open and free, and writing of every sort is accepted. The only absolute criteria for membership are a love for the written word and a willingness to share your writing, and give constructive criticism and encouragement to other members of the group.

The Macon Writers Group has been chosen as an inaugural participant in Community Supported Art: Macon. Community Supported Art (CSA) is sponsored by the 567 Center for Renewal and the Macon Arts Alliance. The goals of the CSA program are to support the arts and to create an engaged community of local arts supporters. CSA supports artists in the creation of new works, in establishing relationships with local patrons and collectors, and helps artists participate in the launch of a new model of art support and distribution. With support from the CSA the Macon Writers Group will create a collection of original written works from its members, which will be bound in a short-run literary magazine style publication, exclusive to CSA shareholders. Along with the journal, an ebook collection will also be created and made available for download by shareholders.

The Macon Writers Group reading and reception is sponsored in part by the Sidney lanier Cottage. The Cottage is located at 935 High Street in Macon.
