An exhibit commemorating The Great Speckled Bird, an alternative newspaper published in Atlanta from 1968 to 1976, will be on display on the main floor of the Tarver Library. The Great Speckled Bird was one of several underground newspapers that appeared in the United States during the 60’s and 70’s. The Bird, as it was commonly known, began its publishing history at Emory University before expanding to a wider audience. The Bird stood out among the alternative press for the quality of its writing, its cover art and its coverage of a range of topics —national and local politics, the counterculture, women’s issues, gay liberation, music and art. It provided an important voice during a turbulent time period. The display was created by Georgia State University and supported by the Georgia Humanities Council.
