"Independence" by Lee Blessing

Presented by Mercer University Theatre at The Back Door Theatre at Willingham Hall - Mercer University

It’s 1983 in Independence, Iowa – a town that’s hard to stay in, but even harder to leave behind. This gripping, often humorous roller coaster ride looks unflinchingly at the lives of three grown daughters and their offbeat mother. A vivid, tender and humorous window into a family, each seeking their own independence.

From the Director:
I’ve been using scenes from this play in class for years because of their truth and humor in looking at the often-difficult family relationships people face in their lives. It’s a play with truly touching moments, as well as moments that induce that instant, side-splitting laughter that only real life can offer! Some mature subject matter and language occur in this true-to-life look at a family in crisis.
