World Oceans Day at the MAS

World Oceans Day at the MAS

Presented by Museum of Arts and Sciences at Museum of Arts & Sciences

Join the MAS and Austin Heil (University of Georgia) in celebration of World Ocean’s Day on June 8th from 10:30-2:30!

Austin Heil is a PhD Candidate in the Science Education department at the University of Georgia. He received a M.S. in Biological Oceanography from Florida State University and worked as a marine biologist for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. Austin’s research has led him to explore many different marine ecosystems, including cool research on deep sea corals and sharks. He currently is in charge of UGA’s Ocean Discovery Summer Camp and outreach for Dr. Mandy Joye, whose research focuses on deep sea ecosystems (ECOGIG).

Remote Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are what scientists use to sample in the deep sea. On World Oceans Day at the Macon Museum, Austin will bring mini ROVs for you to drive. He will also bring along some interesting organisms captured from deep sea ecosystems and (hopefully) some live marine organisms from coastal Georgia.
