Mozart Requiem April 22 Grant Them Rest

Macon, GA —“Eternal rest grant unto them, O, Lord.”   This is the English translation of the first line of the requiem mass.   On Sunday, April 22nd at 4:00 P.M., the Choral Society of Middle Georgia, the Mercer University Choir, the Mercer Singers, and the McDuffie Center of Strings under the direction of Dr. Stanley Roberts, Associate Dean of the Townsend School of Music at Mercer University, and accompanist Jonathan Poe, will present Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s final masterpiece.

The Mozart Requiem is famous for its powerful and moving choral tapestry. It was commissioned by Count Franz von Walsegg in July 1791 as a memorial to his wife who had recently died at the young age of just 21.  Mozart was working on the Magic Flute at the time and didn’t start work on the Requiem until fall of that year.  However, he fell ill while working on the piece and died before it was completed.  At Mozart’s death, the piece was completed by Franz Xaver Süssmayr, Mozart’s pupil who had helped Mozart in his last days.
